Common Pinched Nerve Triggers

Experienced spine surgeon Dr. Zeshan Hyder specializes in minimally invasive procedures that reverse symptoms associated with painful back and neck conditions without long-term scarring or prolonged recovery times. At his clinic in Crown Point, Indiana, Dr. Zeshan Hyder treats diverse cervical and lumbar conditions, including pinched nerves.

Pinched nerves occur when tissue, bone, or muscle applies excessive pressure on a nerve. This can cause excruciating pain, tingling, or numbness. When pinched nerves develop in the spinal column, it is usually due to collapsed vertebrae or inflamed discs. Most times, changes to the spinal column are a natural part of the aging process. Spinal discs shrink and force vertebrae to sit closer together. This narrows the space where nerves exit the spinal cord, and results in compression.

Pinched nerves can also occur as a result of acute injury. The forceful impact associated with car accidents or falls can damage spinal discs, causing them to swell and press against nerves. Likewise, straining from lifting heavy objects can also cause herniated discs.
